Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the shared and private 3 day tour?

The shared tour groups travellers in one minibus with a fixed schedule and a per-person price. The private tour gives you your own vehicle and driver, your choice of departure time, hotels and stops; it is priced per vehicle.

Is €350 the final price?

€350 per person is the published shared-tour price. Confirm the current rate and what it includes when you request a quote; prices can change by season.

How long is the last day?

Day 3 is the longest: roughly 9–10 hours of driving from Merzouga back to Marrakech, with stops. If that is too much, consider ending in Fes instead.

Can I continue to Fes instead of returning?

Yes: see the shared 3 day tour from Marrakech to Fes, which replaces the return drive with the Ziz Valley and Middle Atlas route.

Are children allowed?

Yes, on the shared tour children travel with their parents; tell us ages when booking so seating and camp tents are arranged.

Because it is a loop, the route goes out one way and comes back another: east along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs and the gorges, and back west through the Anti-Atlas and the palm groves of the Drâa Valley. You see a great deal of southern Morocco in a short time, from Atlas passes to the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi.

Camel trek and desert camp: what to expect in Erg Chebbi

You reach Merzouga in the late afternoon of day two. Large luggage stays in the minibus; you take a small overnight bag on a camel ride of about an hour into the dunes, timed for sunset. The camel ride depends on camel availability that day: if none are free, the group drives to camp by 4x4 with a sunset stop on the dunes and rides the camels the next morning on the way back.

At camp there is dinner, music around the fire and a very dark sky for stargazing. You get up early for sunrise over Erg Chebbi, then return to Merzouga for breakfast and a shower before the drive home. Optional extras such as quad biking or sandboarding are not included but can be arranged locally if time allows; read about Sahara desert activities in Merzouga for ideas.

Practical tips for a budget Sahara desert trip from Marrakech

  • Plan a quiet day after: day three is the longest, with roughly 9–10 hours on the road, so avoid booking an early flight the next morning.
  • Bring cash: lunches, drinks, entrance fees and tips are not included. The Moroccan dirham (MAD) is a closed currency, so withdraw or change money in Marrakech; card payment is limited on the route.
  • Dress in layers: the Tizi n'Tichka pass and desert nights can be cold, even after a hot day.
  • Protect against sun and sand: hat, sunglasses, sun cream and a scarf for the camel ride.
  • Keep snacks and water in the minibus for the long stretches between towns.
  • Respect local customs: ask before photographing people and dress modestly in villages.

When to go

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most pleasant seasons. In summer the desert often passes 40 °C in the afternoon, while in winter the nights in the dunes can drop close to freezing and snow can briefly close the Tichka pass. Frequently asked questions

What time does the shared desert tour leave Marrakech?

The shared tour leaves early in the morning from a meeting point in Marrakech. The exact place and time are confirmed the day before departure, so make sure we have your phone or WhatsApp number. You return to Marrakech on the evening of day three, usually around 19:00 to 20:00 depending on traffic.

Is the shared tour suitable for solo travellers?

Yes, it is one of the most popular options for solo travellers. You travel with a small group of people from different countries, share meals at the hotel and camp, and pay a fixed per-person price. Tell us when you book if you are travelling alone so the camp arrangements can be confirmed.

Which language is the shared tour in?

The shared tour runs with an English-speaking driver. If you would rather travel with a French-, Spanish- or Italian-speaking driver-guide, choose the private tour; Spanish and Italian depend on availability for your dates and are confirmed before you book.

What is included in the €350 shared tour price?

The price covers transport by air-conditioned minibus with an English-speaking driver, one night in the Dadès Valley and one in an Erg Chebbi desert camp, both with dinner and breakfast, the camel trek and pick-up and drop-off in Marrakech. Lunches, drinks, entrance fees, tips and optional activities are extra.

Can I join the shared tour at the last minute?

Often yes, because the tour runs at a fixed per-person price and does not need a tailored itinerary. Availability depends on the date, so send us your preferred departure day and number of travellers on WhatsApp or through the form and we will confirm quickly.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag for the desert camp?

No. Bedding is provided at the desert camp, and tents are private for your own party. In winter the nights are cold, so bring warm layers, a hat and socks for sleeping, and a fleece for the sunrise walk on the dunes.
