What is a hot air balloon ride in Morocco like?
Almost all hot air balloon rides in Morocco take off from the plains south and south-west of Marrakech. Balloons need calm, cool air, which is why every flight starts before sunrise. The rhythm of the morning is always much the same:

The flight is gentle rather than thrilling. The balloon drifts with the wind, so there is no sensation of movement, just silence broken by the burner and a slowly changing view. On clear winter and spring mornings the snow on the High Atlas catches the first light, which is the moment most people remember.
Is a Marrakech balloon ride at sunrise right for you?
A balloon flight suits couples celebrating a special occasion, photographers and anyone who wants to see the landscape around Marrakech from a completely different angle. It also works well for families with older children who can stand comfortably in a basket for an hour.
It may not suit you if you dislike very early starts, have a strong fear of heights or have mobility issues that make climbing into a basket difficult. If you have health concerns, check with your doctor and tell us before booking so the operator can advise.
Balloon or helicopter?
- Hot air balloon: peaceful, slow and focused on the sunrise near Marrakech. The most popular choice.
- Private helicopter flight: much faster and more flexible, able to reach the High Atlas or further south, but less common and at a significantly higher cost. It can be requested as part of a luxury private Morocco tour.
Best time of year for a hot air balloon ride in Marrakech
- Autumn and spring (September to November, March to May): mild mornings, generally stable weather and the best visibility. These are the busiest months, so book early.
- Winter (December to February): cold before dawn, but the air is often crystal clear and the Atlas peaks are white with snow. Wrap up warmly for the launch.
- Summer (June to August): flights still run, starting earlier to beat the heat. The haze can soften the mountain views.

What to wear and bring on the flight
- Layers: it is cold on the launch field before sunrise, then warms quickly once the sun is up. A fleece or light jacket you can remove is ideal.
- Shoes: flat, closed shoes, as landings are in open fields.
- Hat: a cap or soft hat protects your head from the heat of the burner.
- Camera: a phone is fine; use a wrist strap so nothing falls overboard.
- Cash: a little Moroccan dirham (MAD) for tips. The dirham is a closed currency, so get it once you arrive in Morocco.
